Through discussions with staff and some parents, we created the following approach to how we want to use food in our school. We all agreed that promoting healthy eating is essential for student learning and for developing healthy lifestyle habits. For some of our students, food in the school can be a significant life threatening concern with allergies. Food would be used for student learning of various curriculum outcomes with appropriate preparation and safety considerations. For birthday celebrations, each teacher has several ways they celebrate the child's birthday at school. We are asking parents NOT to send in food for the celebration. Your support means we can keep the focus on healthy eating and ensure there is no concern for the students who have allergies.
For Halloween, students are able to wear costumes to school. We also recognize not all families celebrate Halloween and students can wear orange and black or their regular school clothes on this day. We are asking students to leave their candy at home. We know this might be a challenge and appreciate your support for keeping our student's minds focused on learning and school a safe environment for all our students.
